Michael Sohnly

Marital status: Married
Children: 3
Occupation: Retired
Comment: I've been working for Boeing here in Washington since 1988. I mostly work on commercial airplanes like the 737, 757 and 767 but have even done some work on 707's and 727's as well. Prior to Boeing I was in the Strategic Air Command as a missle combat crew commander in North Dakota. Spent an entire year of my life buried underground waiting for world war three to start. Never happened ;-(

I did get an MBA while I was there so it wasn't a total loss.

I finally resigned my commision in 1988 when the Air Force wouldn't let me leave North Dakota. The winters were brutal there.

Been married for 28 years come the 16th of July and have three great kids (that all still live at home). Erin, 37, just got engaged on the 1st of July and has her Master degree in teaching. Alison, 36, loves animals and works for a Veterinary clinic. She has a bad habit of bringing home disabled animals that we have trouble saying no to (it's a zoo around here). Eric, 31, is a CAD machinist and is going back to school for a mechanical engineering degree.

My kids finally got me to set up a facebook account saying I needed to "get with the times" so I did that and found loads of people who actually knew me. Total shocker! Posted a video of one of my more ambitious home projects (read that as stupid) on facebook so folks could see what pure terror looked like. If you happen to see it, you can see that I'm actually firing up a home made turbine powered helicopter in my backyard. Not the smartest thing I've done. I put up a Youtube channel so my mom could see some of my projects. Never thought so many people would subscribe to it! Youtube channel under the name "Gyro Captain" with the picture of Bruce Spence from Mad Max II. I only put a few videos of some weird projects I've worked on.

Comment: Where does the time go?  In my 60's now and finally became a grandmother to the most beautiful babies in the world!

I've had great years and low years.  I've learned life is not fair, nor is it easy.  But I've also learned that you have to cherish your friends and you have to make time to laugh and have fun, because when you get old, you are going to want to remember the fun.  I've learned life is short, so don't take yourself too seriously.

I've also learned that Sylvania was a pretty great place to grow up and that I miss it.  I can't wait to see all of you!

Brief recap of the last 40 years:  Miami of Ohio (English major).  Moved to Columbus Ohio during the blizzard of '78.  Got in at CompuServe on the ground floor of an amazing company and stayed for 25 years.  I absolutely loved working there.  Married twice, one wonderful son, Bradley, who's almost 40 and has blessed me with a grandson, named David and granddaughter Lois.  Second husband worked with me at CompuServe and we had some GREAT years.   David passed away in 2008 from a sudden heart attack.  That was the low point of my life.

I found a new career at CAS in Patent Acquisitions, and will have to keep working until 70. I'm over working, but my wallet isn't.

For enjoyment I am the commissioner of a Fantasy Golf league, and I still adore Las Vegas, although I don't go as often as I did when David was alive.  I enjoy most spending time with my family and especially my two adorable grandchildren!

Can't wait to see everyone!

Getting a standing ovation for Bye Bye Birdie. Singing Brian's Song with a small ensemble at the Cat's Meow. Breaking the school record in the 1/2 mile in track!
Who was your favorite teacher?: Louis Davis, Pat Kelso, Fred Marlo
Share an embarrassing moment or a prank that was played on someone else or on you...: Filming a Christmas special for TV, the choir had to share sheet music. In my case, that meant Jim Rigby had to look over my shoulder. Claudia Helmkamp wrote my true feelings for Jim (mushy young LOVE feelings) all over the margins of the sheet music without me knowing. Every time we turned a page, I wanted to kill her! Ah, young, embarrassing love...
