Beth Raymond (Cohen)

Marital status: Married
Children: 1
Occupation: interior architectural designer
Comment: After graduating early, I worked at many jobs so that I could save some $$ to backpack around Europe for the summer with my older sister. Got to see alot of the world's major art and architecture, which came in pretty handy and got to see the Stones in England. It was one of the best times of my life and I often wish I could shuck the responsibilities and go for months at a time sans  backpack (thanks Mdme. Vardinakis, 4 years of French and still nada) and stay in 4 star hotels. Oh well...

Had to be dragged back from Europe kicking and screaming to transfer to my 2nd college. Went on to yet another college much to my father's chagrin where I studied interior design and architecture. Eventually I graduated from Parson's School of Design in NYC (to my father's tears of disbelief). Stayed in NY for many years in the 80's and finally broke the habit and realized there is a life to be found beyond the Hudson River. Once I learned how to sleep in the quite and ride in a car without falling asleep it was smooth sailing.

Since then I've been gainfully employed as an interior designer for one of the best design firms in Baltimore (just 22 years) as a project manager, designing and building mega houses and spending lots and lots of other people's money. Turns out I'm really good at spending other people's money not to mention telling people what to do and using my compulsive organizing skills. Now if we could just loose this recession life would be great.

Got married in the end of the 90's--10/10/99 (it's the only way I can remember the date). I finally found someone nice enough, tall enough and able to put up with my schtick. In 2002 we adopted a beautiful baby boy, named him Seth (our answering machine is out of control...Hi you have reached Jeff, Beth and Seth...) and life hasn't been the same since. What a whirlwind. He's personality glorified and a non stop negotiator. Who knew Lego would come out with so many kits. Who would think that an 8 1/2 year old could generate so much energy. Life is crazy but fun.

So here we are living in a 100 year old house that is a constant work in progress (occupational hazard) and praying that we win the lottery before the plumbing blows.

We get back to Ohio somewhat frequently since my sisters live in Cleveland, but unfortunately I'm not going to be able to make it in for the reunion. I wish all of you a good time and thank God for name tags because we all seem to have changed a bit judging from the photos. Vicki and all you organizers have done a fabulous job. Can't wait to see more pix from the reunion.

I don't remember getting older---do you?

What would your friends be the most surprised to know about you now?: That I am not constantly swimming upstream. That i still like pasta and cottage cheese leftover from my munchy days---but now I add a lot of vegies. Some of my best friends are really responsible adults.
Share a favorite memory -- something that made you laugh or cry or feel pride in your school...share: Watching poor Mr. Berning blush while teaching "health". Getting a ride "jagged" in Mr. Marlo's Jaguar XKE and surviving. Football games and parties, parties and parties.
Who was your favorite teacher?: Ms. Mueller for her energy and her gruesome descriptions of bullfights and Mr. Marlo for his caring, concern and guidance.
Share an embarrassing moment or a prank that was played on someone else or on you...: If only I had any memory cells left. I should thank Doug Y. for that. I had to work hard to come up with the few notes above. I'm sure there were plenty embarrassing moments that I would want to forget...so I did. BUT what I want to know is how that nasty guidance counselor or was she Vice-Principle, got her yard de-toilet papered and cleaned up before dawn the day after Halloween?

Nancy Ring

Marital status: Single again
Occupation: Executive Coach, self-employed
Comment: Sylvania was such a wonderful place to grow up.  If only all the kids today could ride their bikes 'till midnight and lay claim to a trick-or-treat territory that spanned three subdivisions...

After graduating from U of M I spent six years as a lobbyist and political organizer for Common Cause in Michigan. Then, after a brief stint in law school, I moved to Chicago to work for a management firm that specialized in managing professional associations. That's where I learned about organizational development, training and executive coaching and met my two business partners. We formed The Communication Partnership in 1990 and have been helping folks work together more effectively ever since. I love it! I moved down to Charlotte, NC in 1996 and truly enjoy living in the south.  Namaste y'all! It will be great to see you at the reunion.
What would your friends be the most surprised to know about you now?: That despite my strong disinterest in science and math, most of my clients are scientists, and I find them fascinating!

Comment:
This is what I remember about high school. I took the term "high" school literally and entered and exited daily in that fashion. I ran with an older crowd; successfully skipped 2nd period study hall my entire junior year along with skipping 35 days that year; rarely opened a book - unless it was a good read; never got a grade lower than a C;  got caught by Gilchrist and the truant officer (Nazi) lady eating breakfast at Nickerson Farms (expelled for 3 days - reinstated before lunch - thanks mom); played soccer; regret not playing baseball; almost broke my neck maneuvering down the steps by the schools rear entrance in 5" platform shoes; had great fun getting my heart broken by numerous girlfriends (you know who you are ladies), and; was graduated early in the summer of '74 by taking Sociology and Government. During what would have been my senior year, I slept in, played soccer, worked and took some college classes.

Many years later with my hair much shorter (and thinner), I am a Vice President at JWT, also known as J. Walter Thompson, which is the world's oldest advertising agency. I manage advertising for Ford Motor Company throughout the Mid-South and for the Ford Fund (philanthropic arm of Ford Motors).

I have been a resident of Memphis, TN (hold the Elvis jokes) for 16 years. I love the Mid-South. I am married (happily this time) to Lauren, a beautiful woman from Memphis. I have a 25 year old daughter, Katy, who is a registered nurse at a children's hospital in Memphis, a 22 year old son, Andrew, who is a graphic artist, and a delightful 4 1/2 year old daughter, Lilly, who is tearing up the junior kindergarten social circuit. We are very involved with Hope Presbyterian Church which is a 6500 member mega-church where I serve as an elder. Every once in a while I pick up a paint brush and put it to the canvas. More frequently I pick up a wine glass and put it to my lips.

At our 10th high school reunion, which was the last one I attended, I was told by a former classmate that he was surprised to see me doing so well as he didn't think I would amount to anything. He assured me he was quite successful, and I reassured him that as successful as he might be, he was and will always remain the "dweeb" I remembered him as.

I have been back to Sylvania only once since my mother passed in 2001. That was to attend the funeral of my good friend Jeff Barcus (class of '73) who died in 2004. Both my mom and Jeff died of ALS.

As much as I would like to attend, and true to my high school attendance record, I'm going to have to skip this one as well.  Plan the next reunion on a Caribbean Island and I'll be there!
What would your friends be the most surprised to know about you now?: Read "My Story" at www.visualcv.com/jeffrower and you might be quite surprised!
Share a favorite memory -- something that made you laugh or cry or feel pride in your school...share: Kicked the winning goal to beat St. Johns in the playoffs.
Who was your favorite teacher?: Mrs. Hutchison - 10th grade English. Her light hearted, encouraging approach to teaching opened my eyes to the world of fine literature.
Share an embarrassing moment or a prank that was played on someone else or on you...: I don't believe there is a statute of limitations on that crime...so I'll refrain from commenting.

Comment: Thank you to all who have organized this event.

This Spring, Colgate Univ graduated my oldest son and my youngest departed Hathaway Brown for college. Two are headed for Virginia Tech as engineering students. My husband is a terrific friend and we have a house full of children this summer as immigrant boys attend academic programs in our area, and our kids head in and out to work.  I am studying with the Renovare Institute and contemplate the writings of Dallas Willard as often as my brain will allow.

After Miami Univeristy I taught high school and had a small interior design business before taking on the humbling and life giving work of parenting. I am a spiritual director, which means I listen to people.   International Justice Mission and immigrant resettlement in the US are two of my focuses.

I am better off than I deserve.

What would your friends be the most surprised to know about you now?: In the last ten years I have raised alpacas, torn my ACL exiting a ski lift, survived half marathons and have come to think anew of Jesus as brilliant rather than semi-comatose.
Share a favorite memory -- something that made you laugh or cry or feel pride in your school...share: Mr Davis increased my college tuition fund by suggesting that my mother's money was wasted on private voice lessons. I kept telling her I couldn't sing! My children confirm this today by increasing the Sonos volume.
Who was your favorite teacher?: Anyone able to create the dictionary into a comrade is a remarkable teacher. Hats off to master teachers like Mr Marlo who inspired me to continue taking classes to this day.
Share an embarrassing moment or a prank that was played on someone else or on you...: Mrs. Vaznelis taught Home Ec and between tailoring lessons pointed out that athleticism is not entirely the domain of the youthful. She proved this by doing the splits in class, with little warning. In disbelief, we wondered if we were witnesses of the first SHS teacher casualty. She was, after all, VERY OLD - maybe 47? Call 911.

The other most upsetting SHS event was the cheerleaders' fund raiser selling - I am not kidding - toothbrushes.
